CHANGES AND TRENDS THAT AFFECT ESTATE PLANNING

Terry Gilholme and Jason Sweeney will talk about areas in estate planning that are evolving (blended families, legislative changes, physician assisted suicide, advances, etc.) and that are relevant to accountants and other professionals who dea

l with individuals.

Terry Gilholme

Terry’s practice is divided between estate planning matters: wills, enduring powers of attorney, personal directives and trusts, and estate administration matters: assisting executors in applying for probate and in the administration of estates. She is a former chairperson of the Canadian Bar Association, Wills and Trusts section. She is also a member of the Society of Estate and Trust Practitioners, the Estate Planning Council, the Calgary Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association. Terry has been included in Best Lawyers in Canada in the practice area of Trusts and Estates from 2009 to 2016. She was named Best Lawyers' 2013 Calgary Trusts and Estates "Lawyer of the Year". Terry has provided seminars on a voluntary basis for numerous organizations, including Leave a Legacy and the Calgary Board of Education, Chinook Learning Centre. She received both of her degrees from the University of Alberta and she has lived in Calgary since 1992. Terry and her husband, Jim, have two teenage children.

Jason Sweeney

Jason is experienced in Estates, Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Personal Directives. Jason assists and advises clients on the many issues that arise regarding the preparation of their estate planning documents. Jason also advises executors and trustees on the myriad of concerns that may arise surrounding the administration of estates and trusts. He is also developing an interest in charitable giving and the role that philanthropy can play in estate planning. Jason has provided seminars and presentations for a number of community and industry associations on the subject of estate planning and is a member of various professional organizations including the Canadian Bar Association (Wills and Estates Section) and the Calgary Bar Association. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, he also received his education at the University of Saskatchewan. Jason is married to Bonnie and is the proud father of his daughter, Grace. He spends his increasingly rare free time reading, listening to music, walking his dog, and thinking about learning to play the guitar.
