Private Corporation Shares: Post Mortem and Other Planning Strategies: Where are we now?

Select strategies and opportunities for efficiently accessing corporate earnings and mitigating double-tax exposure on death of a shareholder will be reviewed and discussed against the background of the 2017 proposed amendments and Budget 2018. This session will provide an update on accepted planning and recent trends.

Sander van der Wissel obtained his experience in tax and trust law in the tax groups at Burnet Duckworth & Palmer and at Felesky Flynn LLP in Calgary. Before starting his own firm, Sander was a partner at Armstrong & Partners Law Firm.

Sander started his legal career in South Africa. Before moving to Canada in 1999, he practised primarily in the area of commercial litigation as a barrister at the Johannesburg Bar, which he was called to in 1991. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 2000.

Lori Bokenfohr is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the New York State Bar Association, and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Taxation from Osgoode Hall, York University.

Lori was previously an associate at White & Case LLP, a global law firm based in New York, and in the tax group of Ernst & Young LLP. In her current practise, she assists entrepreneurs with business structuring, reorganization, acquisitions, and asset and share sales. She also works with private enterprises to implement business and estate succession strategies, and long-term wealth management plans.
