Resolving Tax Disputes

This month's session is about following tax disputes from audit through objections and to Court, including when you should engage a tax lawyer; taxpayer relief provisions (i.e. fairness provisions) and rectification; and an update on current taxation case law.

Our presenter, Lisa Handfield of Mainwood Legal Services, is best described as a knowledgeable professional who really, really likes to win – basically the Sherlock Holmes of problem solving (she is all about the facts and the law) – wrapped up in a witty style!

She is both a corporate lawyer and a Chartered Professional Accountant based in Calgary, Alberta. She holds a Masters of Law degree as well as a specialized designation as a Trust and Estate Practitioner. Lisa’s practice in association with Mainwood Legal focuses primarily on corporate law, wills and estates, trust law, estate planning, estate litigation, tax law (including GST) and tax dispute resolution.

Lisa has over 10 years of experience including working for the Canada Revenue Agency Appeals division, in-house for a large corporation, and working with high-net worth clients of a major bank.

In her work as both a corporate lawyer and a Trust and Estate Practitioner, Lisa enjoys working with individuals and helping them solve their problems quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. Her accounting designation as well as her experience with Canada Revenue Agency have made her our resident corporate and tax law specialist.

Lisa is an active member of the following associations:

  • Canadian Bar Association (member)
  • Canadian Tax Foundation (member)
  • Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP) – National Education Committee & member
  • STEP Calgary Chapter Executive

When not at work, Lisa spends her time with her husband, young daughter and the family’s three dogs.
