Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Incentive (SR&ED) Program

Julien Karcher of KPMG LLP is going to talk about Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program. It uses tax incentives to encourage Canadian businesses of all sizes and in all sectors to conduct research and development in Canada. He will emphasize the following topics:

  • SR&ED in a nutshell
  • What's new?
  • What are the SR&ED indicators?
  • How to maximize your RS&ED credits.
  • CRA audits: Common reason why claims are denied

Julien holds a Master of Science in Engineering from George Washington University. He started his career as a Research Engineer in the U.S. and specialized in projects for transportation companies and government agencies. After a few years of technical experience, he transitioned to consulting work and started his career in tax incentive practice in France for F.Iniciativas.

During that time, he prepared R&D tax credit claims for hundreds of French corporations (SMEs and Multinationals) across a variety of industries. In 2013, Julien moved to Calgary and to pursue his career in SR&ED for Boast Capital. Over 6 years, he led the SR&ED practice, prepared hundreds of different claims in Canada for all types of companies and industries, and helped the business grow from 5 people to over 20 people. For continued growth, Julien joined KPMG as a Senior Manager of the tax incentives practice in May 2019.
