Work and Marriage – A Legal Update
Arthur Olson is a lawyer with Navigator Law. The purpose of is talk is to cover two significant legal changes that all CPAs will need to keep top of mind when meeting with their clients.
Work: This spring the provincial government enacted amendments to employment standards legislation on matters such as holiday pay, and hours of work. Arthur will tell you about where we are now, and discussing tips and traps when it comes to employment legislation.
Marriage: The outgoing provincial government made major changes to family property legislation. As of right now those changes are set to come into force on January 1, 2020. He will explain why couples who have never said “till death do us part” may nevertheless find themselves in a world of “to debt do us part”. Also discussed will be tips for assisting your clients avoid these problems in the first place.
Arthur has a passion for working with business owners. He received a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Calgary in 2003 and proceeded worked in Ottawa, with the Department of Finance. There, he was a tax policy officer, working on the federal budget and this day he continues to read every page of the budget.
Arthur was called to bar in 2011, and his practice focuses on tax planning, and business law. He received his Juris Doctor (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan in 2010. He is currently a member of the Canadian Tax Federation and the Calgary Bar Association.
As well, Arthur has taught courses in Economics at the University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba. He enjoys spending his free time with his children and in his kitchen.
