We have two speakers from KPMG this month. One will be Jennifer Muirhead, MAcc, CPA, CA, and the other is Elena Balkos, who is a Senior Associate, Indirect Tax.
Jennifer is a Partner in the Tax practice at KPMG in Canada and leads the Indirect Tax practice in Calgary. She began her career with KPMG and has been practicing in the area of indirect tax since 2001. Jennifer has worked in Ontario, British Columbia, and most recently in Alberta. This keeps her at the forefront of significant indirect tax changes over the years, including harmonization and de-harmonization, and constantly evolving legislation and administrative policies.
Jennifer’s experience covers a wide array of industries including oil and gas, financial services, manufacturing, software, real estate and public sector entities. She is also heavily involved in advising clients on the indirect tax implications of existing and proposed transactions and structures and the associated compliance obligations, as well as obtaining rulings and interpretations on complex indirect tax matters. And she is also a regular speaker at CPA and other technical conferences.
Elena is a senior manager with KPMG LLP and associate with KPMG Law LLP and practices out of its Toronto office.
Elena has over 14 years experience advising in the areas of GST/HST, retail sales tax (PST), land transfer tax, employer health tax and property tax. Clients seek her strong technical knowledge and legal background to help navigate the complexities of indirect tax, minimize risks and reduce tax costs.
She is also experienced in representing clients in audits, objections and voluntary disclosures with the Canada Revenue Agency and the Ministry of Finance. She helps ensure smooth and successful outcomes and provides support during what can be an overwhelming process. Finally, as part of KPMG Law LLP, she represents clients in appeals to the Tax Court of Canada.
Elena has written numerous articles on GST/HST, land transfer tax and property tax and has spoken on such topics at conferences hosted by CPA Canada, Council on State Taxation, Tax Executives Institute, Law Society of Ontario, Ontario Bar Association, and the Canadian Property Tax Association.
