Navigating Tax Debt: Strategies for Financial Recovery

Presented by: Charla Smith & Trevor Cawston

    Location: Carriage House Inn

    Date: June 19, 2024

    Lunch: 11:30am

    Presentation: 12:00pm

This session will provide information on options and strategies for clients or prospective clients that are substantially behind on tax payments, including those that have been non-compliant over a significant period of time. Charla will discuss how tax debt can be dealt with through an insolvency filing, while Trevor will review strategies to avoid an insolvency filing.

    Charla Smith LIT, CIRP, CPA
    Bio

Charla Smith is a Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) and President of Charla Smith & Company, which provides individuals, including business owners, with a highly personalized environment where they can work closely with a small team of experienced professionals to find a solution to overwhelming debt.

Charla earned her CPA-CGA designation while working as an accountant in the oil and gas industry. But after one of her employers had a brush with insolvency, she was drawn to the fast pace of corporate restructuring. After over a decade of managing corporate bankruptcies, proposals, receiverships, and CCAA proceedings, including the high-profile bankruptcy of Redwater Energy Corporation, Charla realized she wanted to take the time to work with the individuals behind the corporations. And Charla Smith & Company was born.

    Trevor Cawston, CPA
    Bio

Trevor Joined Cawston and Associates in 2007.  His background includes audit representation, voluntary disclosures, collections, assessments, appeals, bankruptcy representation, and taxpayer relief.
